How a $300 Canvas Order Turned Into a $900 Lesson

In procurement, drift shows up in three ways:

What surprised me—the outsider blindspot—was that most buyers (including me) focus on unit price and miss the cumulative drift. We negotiate the per-piece cost like it’s the whole battle, while the real war is fought in the margins of spec changes, rush fees, and undisclosed minimums.
The Real Cost of Drift (A Personal Example)

- Audit quarterly — I pull every order from the previous three months and compare the original quote to the final invoice. The vendors who consistently drift more than 10% get flagged for renegotiation or replacement.
