The Difference Between Hawk and Falcon (and Why It Matters)

If you've ever looked at a bird of prey and asked, "Okay, is that a hawk or a falcon?" you're in good company. I hear that question a lot in my job.

  • Hawks (Cooper's, sharp-shinned, red-tailed) usually have a more angular head, a brow ridge, and folded wings that sit higher on the back.
  • Falcons look compact and streamlined. Hawks look broader in the chest and shoulders.

Scenario B: The Bird Is Flying or Hunting

  • Buteo hawks have broad, rounded wings and often hold their wrists slightly raised in a shallow V. They beat slower and deeper.

Here's the trap: people try to use color first. They look for white patches or light undersides. I call those the "white stats"—all the little plumage measurements that you find in field guides. They're useful, but they're unstable. A red-tailed hawk can look almost entirely pale in bright sun. A juvenile peregrine can look darker and heavier than an adult. The shape of the wing and the rhythm of the beat don't change with the light.

Scenario C: You're Looking at a Photo, a Decal, or an Incident Report

  1. Is the wing pointed or rounded?
  2. Is the tail long or short compared to the body?
  3. Is there a dark "moustache" on the face, or a pale brow?
  4. What habitat is the bird in? Open grassland favors falcons like kestrels; dense edges favor accipiters.

If you can't answer the first two, stop. Enter "unknown raptor." An accurate unknown beats a wrong hawk/falcon label every time.

How to Know Which Scenario You're In

If the bird is perched and you can see the front of its head, use Scenario A.

If the bird is moving, even slowly, use Scenario B. This is the most common situation in the field, and it's also where people make the biggest mistakes.

If you're looking at a photo, a report, a decal, or a data sheet, use Scenario C. You have the luxury of time—use it.

The wrong approach is to memorize a dozen field marks and then try to match the first one you remember. Our Q1 2024 audit of bird-strike logs at logistics sites found that "hawk" was used as a catch-all for almost every raptor, including obvious falcons. The fix wasn't better color photos; it was teaching people to start with wing shape.

A Final Note (and Some Hindsight)

This was accurate as of spring 2025. Raptor ranges and migration patterns can shift, so do verify current range maps for your location. The structural differences, though, are stable enough to rely on.

So, the next time someone asks you, "What's the difference between hawk and falcon?" look at the wings first. If the wings are pointed and the beat is quick, it's likely a falcon. If the wings are rounded and the tail is long, it's likely a hawk. And if you still can't tell, that's okay. Say so. In quality work, an honest "unknown" is a lot easier to fix than a confident "I guessed."
